A YOUNG mother was hurt and shaken when a rock was thrown at her car from behind roadside bushes in an area of Killarney that has become notorious for such behaviour.
The woman was driving in the Tiernaboul area when the rock smashed the windscreen of her vehicle, close to the depot for An Post and the IDA Industrial Estate.
The woman suffered cuts to her face when the windscreen smashed and particles of glass became embedded in her eye.
She was brought to the accident and emergency department of Kerry General Hospital after the incident on Wednesday night and was discharged 12 hours later after receiving treatment.
She must return to the hospital for further assessment in the coming days.
A close friend of the victim told KillarneyToday.com: “She very nearly crashed the car. 99 per cent of the time she has her two-year-old child in the car with her. It’s a disgrace.”
The problem is not new to the area and gardaí are aware that it has been ongoing for several months, if not longer.
Another driver told KillarneyToday.com before Christmas that he had a very lucky escape when the windscreen of his car was smashed by a rock thrown from the same area.
He said it is the second time it had happened to him and that missiles were being hurtled onto the main road with frightening regularity, particularly late at night.
“This has been going on for far too long and it has become a massive problem. The people responsible have no idea of the danger they are causing,” he said.
Anyone with any information that might assist in the investigation or those that might have observed suspicious activity in the area is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064-6631222.
