Yes Minister, now we’re Rebels

Kerry Rebels: Kieran Donaghy and Brendan Griiffin in a snapshot posted on social media by the Junior Minister

A LITTLE over a month after he hung up his green and gold jersey for the last time, Kieran Donaghy is back playing in Croke Park.

And, to the absolute horror of Kerry fans everywhere, he is wearing the blood and bandages red of Cork.

But it’s all in a good cause – the legendary Kerry full forward was playing his part in a charity match to raise funds for and awareness of the Alan Kerins Self Help Africa project which works in nine countries across Africa, tackling poverty and improving the lives of local communities.

The fundraising challenge involved match between Cork and Mayo selections with guest players on each side and Donaghy lining out for the Rebels.

But at least he was in good company as taking to the field alongside him was one other than Junior Minister for Transport, Sort and Tourism Brendan Griffin.

Other that strutted their stuff at Croker included Henry Shefflin, DJ Carey, Seán Óg Ó Ailpín, jockey Tony McCoy, athletes Sonia O’Sullivan and Rob Heffernan, Donaghy’s old sparring partner Mayo’s Aidan O’Shea and Dublin’s Dean Rock.

The day also featured a live recording of popular sports show, Off The Ball, and commentary by Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh.

In just over a decade, Galway sports star Alan Kerins has raised close to €5 million to help end poverty and suffering of tens of thousands of people in rural Southern Africa.
