After years of highlighting the dangers in the area, a Killarney councillor has welcomed confirmation from the municipal district roads department that work will finally begin next week on the construction of the long-awaited pedestrian crossing on Countess Road.
The chosen location is adjacent to the entrance to Countess Grove, Muckross Grove and Dromhale Close.
Cllr Brendan Cronin said following a meeting with local residents in early 2019, he initiated a campaign to highlight the need for this crossing and, he said, he has been working relentlessly on the important public safety project ever since.
“I welcome the news that all matters have been agreed and finalised with adjacent landowners for the works to proceed,” he said.
“The requirement for a proper pedestrian crossing at this location is vital for safety in this substantial residential area on a very busy road which also accesses a major primary school,” he added.
Cllr Cronin has contributed €5,000 of his annual councillor’s allocation to help fund the project and also acknowledged the contributions from other members in the municipal district.
