Woman airlifted to hospital in critical condition

A YOUNG woman is understood to be in a critical condition and a young man has also been hospitalised following a dreadful kayaking accident near Glencar on Saturday afternoon.

The 20-year-old woman and 21-year-old man were part of a group of 20 students from the University of Limerick who were kayaking in the Caragh River during an adventure weekend in Kerry.

It is reported that the accident occurred when they were kayaking upriver from the Blackstone Bridge and they were separated from their kayaks in the river which was very swollen after very heavy rain.

Emergency services, including an ambulance crew, the air ambulance, Iveragh Coast Guard, the fire service and gardai rushed to the scene when the alarm was raised.

The young woman, from Cork, was airlifted to Kerry University Hospital by Community Rapid Response helicopter and the male – who is said to be in a stable condition – was transferred by ambulance.
