AN unexpected delay in proceeding with a planned road safety scheme in one area of Killarney has had hugely positive benefits for two other projects in the municipal district.
The required planning legislation for a safety scheme on Rock Road was secured earlier this month and part of the plan was to relocate networks from overhead to underground.
The project will also involve the provision of 370m of new footpaths, an extension of the existing cycleway, new public lighting and a new road overlay.
To facilitate the undergrounding work it will require consultations with other service providers in the area but the process will not now be completed prior to the November 30 deadline for the draw-down of the available road restoration grant of €150,813.
Kerry County Council has now opted to defer the Rock Road works until 2020 and, instead, €112,500 will be spent on improvements on the L-3016 Mangerton Road in Muckross and a further €38,000 will go to the L-2033 Castleisland Cross to Rossaneen road.
The overall budget for the Castleisland project is €102,000 and the remaining €40,000 required will be allocated on 2020.
The plan is to commence both projects on Monday next, September 30.
