Wild thing: Satu hits the road

Wild Atlantic WayAN internationally respected and award-winning travel blogger is currently undertaking a five-week cycle adventure along the Wild Atlantic Way and the red carpet is being rolled out for her in Kerry.

Finnish blogger Satu Vänskä-Westgarth has been joined by a friend, Anne Marit from Norway, on the marathon 2,500km bicycle journey and she will chart her travels on her Destination Unknown Facebook page.

Her daily online reports will reach an audience of hundreds of thousands of people in Scandanavia and other parts of the world and the venture is expected to lead to a considerable boost in visitor numbers to Killarney and other parts of Kerry.

Travelling up to 100km each day, the two women are travelling all the way from Donegal to Kinsale and their itinerary will see them on the roads of Kerry all this week.

GoKerry’s social media co-ordinator, Dave Elton, has been in regular contact with the cyclists and has been following their progress since they set off from Derry on August 4.

Dave, a cycling enthusiast, welcomed Satu and Anne to Tarbert last Friday and guided them to Tralee. They spent the weekend with relatives before heading on to Dingle and Slea Head, over two days.

Their journey also took in Glenbeigh and Waterville, followed by three nights in Kenmare until next weekend.

Killarney-based GoKerry official, Louise Langan, said they advised their members of the cycling duo’s endeavours and the response with regards to offers of hospitality and goodwill was quite overwhelming.

She urged the public to be on the lookout for the two intrepid cyclists and to give them a warm welcome to help ensure they take home good memories of fun-filled, welcoming Kerry.

Tourism Ireland’s manager in the Nordic Region, Tiernaboul, Killarney native Aileen Hickey, said the five-week cycle was a very effective way of engaging people through social media and it would help to spark curiosity about the Wild Atlantic Way.
