Work is expected to commence on the development on new cycling infrastructure in Killarney town over the summer following agreement by local councillors on the proposals. The €5 million project will go to tender shortly with construction expected to begin in the mid to late summer.

The new infrastructure includes a total of 3.8km of cycle paths on Rock Road, Lewis Road, Park Road, the Gaelscoil Road and Deerpark Road.

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin welcomed the decision to unanimously approve the Part VIII planning process. He described the project as transformative for the town.

Education Minister and Kerry TD, Norma Foley, today welcomed the approval of over €5.6 million in funding for walking and cycling projects in towns and villages across Kerry.

Today’s announcement is part of the first ever major active travel investment programme for rural Ireland.

Among the projects that it will support are the creation of new footpaths and segregated cycle lanes, reconstructing old or damaged paths, cycle parking, improved road crossings, design work for new pedestrian and cycling bridges, and closing roads to car traffic.

Minister Foley said: “I welcome this funding which will continue to make Kerry towns and villages a safe place for walking and cycling. The projects being funded today will make a real difference to rural life and ensure that communities across Kerry are better connected.”
