Weldon leads Ireland to EuroBasket 2023

James Weldon: Reappointed head coach

KILLARNEY man James Weldon has been reappointed as coach of the Irish senior women’s basketball squad having led his country to the final of the FIBA European Championships for Small Countries in July.

He will now concentrate on spearheading the challenge for the EuroBasket 2023 qualifiers which will get underway in November.

Weldon, a former national league star and coach with Killarney club St Paul’s, described his appointment as a great honour.

He said with Ireland now competing at the highest level in Europe, work will have to commence immediately to ensure his squad is ready for the qualifiers when his charges will play the Netherlands, Belarus and the Czech Republic.

The group winners and the four best runners-up from the qualifiers will go through to the championships which will be held in February 2023.

Weldon, a three-time SuperLeague coach of the year who won nine national league titles with UL Huskies, previously worked as an assistant coach with the Irish senior women’s team from 2003 to 2006 and he had been head coach with the under 18 women’s side.

He also worked with the Kerry senior football team as an advisor on tactics during the latter stages of Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s term at the helm.
