Three years after a new cycle network was proposed for Killarney and consultations on the matter concluded, it is now time to see work on the ground, the Green Party in Kerry has insisted.
The party’s Killarney representative, Diarmuid Griffin, welcomed the allocation of Active travel funding, announced on Wednesday, which rubber-stamps €2 million for projects in and around the town.
“Killarney is a busy town and it has issues with vehicular traffic. Anything that encourages active travel and reduces traffic should be seized upon by Kerry County Council,” he said.

Griffin stressed that one of the best ways to see Killarney and the adjoining national park is by bicycle.
“The funding for cycleways and walkways is there and I would see it as a priority to get the work done and make active travel safer for tourists and locals,” he said.
The Killarney Green Party representative acknowledged that work is set to begin in quarter one or two of this year and, he said, he hopes a start date will be announced soon.
Cycleway developments approved for funding in Killarney include Lewis Road, Rock Road, Deerpark Road, Gaelscoil Faithleann to Chestnut Drive and the Flesk Cycleway and Walkway.
