Killarney is full.
That was the emphatic message Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae had for his colleagues in Dáil Éireann when discussing the contentious issue of accommodating refugees and asylum seekers.
He said there has to be a limit put on the numbers arriving in the town seeking accommodation and services and it is worrying that so much of the town’s hotel and guesthouse accommodation is taken up by asylum seekers and refugees.
“While we want to see after those who are there, there must be a cap put on the numbers.
“We cannot see after the refugees we have already and we cannot see after our own people,” Deputy Healy-Rae said.
The social welfare offices and the local doctors are struggling to cope with the demand and, the Kerry TD insisted, there is more to seeing after the refugees and asylum seekers than just putting them into a bed and putting a roof over their heads.
“There is so much more involved and we need to have a proper debate on the number of refugees and asylum seekers we are accepting because Killarney is full,” he stressed.
