Walk this way as street plan approved

Plunkett Street will be off limit for vehicles from 7pm until 7am all year long

A PLAN to pedestrianise Killarney’s Plunkett Street from 7pm until 7am all-year round has been approved by Killarney Municipal District Council.

Vehicular traffic will be prevented from entering the narrow town centre street for 12 hours a day throughout the year and, in addition, the street will be pedestrian only for extended trial periods at other times of the year.

The all-year round plan will come into force on Monday, April 9 and in addition to the permanent 12-hour policy, the street will also be sealed off to traffic from 11am until 7am the next day from this Saturday, March 31 to April 9, from May 11 to May 21 and from June 29 to September 1.

There will be a four-hour window on all of those dates to facilitate commercial deliveries and arrangements will be put in place for emergency vehicle access at all times.

The street will be closed from Reen’s Pharmacy to the Main Street junction and vehicles travelling from College Street will have to turn at College Square, at the Glebe car park.

Every business on Plunkett Street was contacted in advance of the plan being implemented and three public submissions were received, from Downing, Courtney and Larkin Solicitors, on behalf of Eoin Reen of Reen’s Pharmacy, from JJ’s Nu Era and from John Hurley.

Gardai in Killarney said they have no objection to the pedestrianisation plan which, Killarney Town Manager, Angela McAllen, stated is designed to improve traffic management, enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility, help reduce pollution promote sustainable transport and improve the ambiance and vibrancy of the town core.
