THE family and friends of a young Killarney woman, who lost her life in tragic circumstances, are organising a memorial walk to mark the 20th anniversary of her passing.
Orla Benson was just 22 years of age and had been due to graduate from university with an honours degree in biotechnology, when she died in Boston in 1995.
Muckross Lake – one of Orla’s favourite places – will be the centre point of the memorial walk which will take place on September 19 from 11.00am.
There are two options for those who would like to walk in the popular Killarney woman’s memory. The Muckross Lake loop, around Dinis, will take between two to two-and-a-half hours while a walk from Dundag to Torc Waterfall will take about an hour.
Both walks will conclude close Muckross Community Centre and the meeting point for the walk is in front of the café at Muckross House.
There will be a collection on the day for the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre for those who wish to contribute.
Academic awards in Orla’s memory are presented each year in St Brigid’s Secondary School in Killarney and DCU and an annual football tournament in her honour is held in Boston.
The organisers of the event have set up a Facebook page – Orla’s walk – where details of the event can be found.
