THE Kerry Sports Academy at the Munster Technological University has helped 10,000 people to keep fit, healthy and active with a free wellbeing programme during the Covid-19 lockdown.
It has played a leading role in community wellness live on zoom or as part of ommunity challenges.
Free initiatives have included free online fitness classes ranging from Zumba, yoga, circuits and Tabata, Wellness Wednesday sessions and a couch to 5k programme.
The facility has also provided sports team training for children and adults, a weight loss challenge and motivational talks from Munster rugby players.
Staff at Kerry Sports Academy have also organised a One Million Steps Challenge which raised over €4,000 for University Hospital Kerry to go towards the purchase of new ventilator equipment as the hospital battled the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.
Hazel Byrne, Operations Manager of Kerry Sports Academy, said when the pandemic hit, they were immediately aware that people needed support to maintain a level of fitness and activity during lockdown.
“As fitness and wellness practitioners, we felt a responsibility to do our best to help people through this difficult time. We are proud that we’ve been able to use our skills to make the rolling lockdowns we’ve all experienced even a little bit better,” she said.
