PUPILS and teachers at St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School in Killarney are working on a very clever and novel way of promoting the Irish language through the use of modern technology.

Transition Year students have taken to social media to start an Irish blog aimed at students, parents or anyone interested in learning the cúpla focail.

In just three months they have produced 90 different posts and accumulated almost 600 followers.

The 4Red TY class operates on Instagram under the name gaeilgeoiriairne – Gaeilgeoirí represents Irish speakers at all levels and Áirne represents Cill Áirne – and they ensure to include something of interest to everyone, including grammar seanfhocail, vocabulary, local and national geography, exam tips and even occasion jokes and it is all done in the Irish language.

“As this year is Bliain na Gaeilge, we thought it would be beneficial to change the outlook people have of the Irish language and to try and reach people in a fun way,” said Irish teacher Sinéad Collins.

“We are using social media because it plays a pivotal role in the lives of young people today,” she added.
