Tunnel off limits for safety reasons

THE N71 national secondary road between Kenmare and Glengarriff, at the Caha Tunnel, is to be closed off for four days to allow for remedial work.

It is proposed to close the road to traffic between Monday, September 3 and Friday, September 7 to allow for these essential works to be carried out.

Surveys carried out earlier this year identified evidence of loose or hollow rock in the tunnel at a number of locations which requires remedial action.

Under Section 75 of the Roads Act, 1993, Kerry County Council is proposing to close the road between Kenmare and Glengarriff to allow work to be completed without any risk to road users and to ensure public safety.

Access to within a short distance on both sides of the Caha Tunnel will be maintained for residents but the tunnel will be fully closed. It is proposed to put diversions in place via Castletownbere and Ballyvourney for the duration of the works..

Objections to the proposal should be lodged, in writing, with the Kerry National Road Design Office, The Island Centre, Castleisland not later than 4.00pm on Wednesday, August 1.
