True grit on a truly spectacular course

DEMONSTRATING incredible strength, willpower, stamina and determination, gritty endurance athletes have set out on the Kerry Way Ultra Marathon and they are staying the course in dramatic style despite the huge physical and mental demands it is placing on them.

The spectacular but teak-tough event is a daunting 40-hour, 200km, non-stop trek which traverses the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and Iveragh Peninsula, stretching along the Wild Atlantic Way, over ancient trails, old roads and rugged coastal cliffs.

It is which traverses the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and Iveragh Peninsula, stretching along The Wild Atlantic Way, along ancient trails and old roads and coastal cliffs.

It is Ireland’s longest distance – and most beautiful –  trail route and the athletes set out on their 40-hour journey bright and early this morning from Sheahan’s Centra on Muckross Road with Sean Clifford from Killarney hoping to set a new world record.

Race Director Eileen Daly, also from Killarney, and support crews and friends were there to wave them off and specialist outdoor and adventure photographer Valerie O’Sullivan was perched high on the hills between the Black Valley and the Bridia Valley to capture the athletes in action.
