Killarney Celtic FC has led the tributes to the late Philip O’Sullivan who was a dedicated coach with the club, at various levels, for several years.
He passed away, unexpectedly, in the UK after travelling to attend a Premiership match involving his beloved Liverpool and Newcastle United.
Kerry league and cup champions Celtic issued a statement saying the club was “rocked to its core” when informed of his sudden passing.
“Phil was much loved part of our coaching team in recent years, coaching with Eugene Cosgrave at youths, academy and underage level.
The club said he was a larger than life character who will be a huge loss and sadly missed.
“We are absolutely devastated and our sincere condolences go out to everyone who knew Phil. May he rest in peace,” the statement read.
Celtic vice chairman, Paul Sherry, said learning of Philip’s passing led to one of the darkest days for some time.
“The light will shine again as I know that when we think of Phil – and we will – we can but smile. Rest easy Phil,” he said.
Philip, who was a hugely popular member of staff at Leane’s Tool Hire, lived in Ashgrove, and was formerly from Ballyspillane, Killarney.
Staff at Leane’s Tool Hire said they were “truly blessed” to have worked alongside him for 19 years.
“To us he was more like family. He was our rock,” they said in a tribute.
“We loved his daily words of wisdom and, of course, the laughs. There was never a dull moment with Phil around”.
His work colleagues added that Phil had a heart of gold and they all loved him dearly
They added that while he will be greatly missed, they have memories now that they will treasure forever.
Predeceased by his daughter Charlie, Philip is survived by his partner of Karen and children Craig, Alice and Edison.
He is further mourned by his parents, Betty and Frank, sister Jennifer, brother-in-law Alan, close family, neighbours and wide circle of friends.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
