Traffic calming plans on Ross Road to go ahead

The plans for the traffic calming measures on Ross Road

A proposal to introduce a controlled raised pedestrian crossing on the L3905 Ross Road in Killarney, with minor alignment of the kerb lines at the entrance to the Castle Falls estate, has been rubber-stamped by councillors.

The crossing will be located immediately south of the junction of Ross Road and Castle Falls and it will provide pedestrian and cycle links with improved access between the Flesk cycleway and walkway and the existing footpath on Ross Road.

Drawings showing the proposed works were presented to local councillors at a meeting on Tuesday and six councillors voted in favour with Cllr John O’Donoghue absent at the time of the vote.

The meeting heard that although the plans were advertised publicly, just one observation was received and that was from An Garda Siochána who asked that consideration be given to changing plans for a zebra crossing a controlled pedestrian crossing activated by pedestrians via a push button.

Senior engineer David Doyle said discussions had taken place with representatives of Killarney racecourse and the residents of Castle Falls. When Killarney Races are in progress there is sufficient space for the horses to use a designated green strip alongside the cycleway.
