WITH the astronomical calendar nudging closer to the Winter Solstice, on Saturday December 21, it’s almost time to celebrate the ancient past by climbing the Paps of Anú which have long been associated with the Goddess Anú.

And those that opt to do so will be supporting a very worthy cause in the palliative care service of the Kerry Hospice Foundation.

The Paps, located in the Derry na Saggart mountains, close to the Kerry-Cork border, are named after Anú, Goddess of Pre-Christian Ireland and Mother Goddess of the Tuatha De Danann. They are associated with mythology and majesty, representing all that is earthly fertile, abundant and protective.

Derry and Rosie Healy will provide the music for the Kerry polka

The walk will depart from Garries Bridge – the first bridge after St Agatha’s Church in Glenflesk –  at 5.45am and an ancient blessing of fire, led by Mary Cronin of Glenflesk, will herald the beginning of the walk in darkness.

The climb to the summit has two strenuous inclines, leading to the Western Pap at 690m. Sunrise will see Glenflesk musicians Derry and Rosie Healy setting the pace for a Kerry polka set, followed by an ancient ceremonial blessing of light.

The trek will be led by experienced mountaineer Donie Mulcahy and his crew and the celebration is part of the Christmas in Killarney seasonal calendar of events.

After descending the ancient mountain, a ceremonial solstice gathering will be held in the Killarney Plaza Hotel, Killarney at 10.30am where donations for the chosen charity will be collected. A good level of fitness is required and guides will be on duty for gear check before departure.
