THE amount of illegal dumping of rubbish in towns and villages around Kerry has now become an embarrassment, it has been stated.
The persistent problem has been highlighted by Cllr Michael Cahill who has called for a total clampdown on dumping in the county and harsher penalties for any culprits that are caught.
“It is disgraceful, unacceptable and out of hand at this stage,” he said,

“It is embarrassing to see the amounts of household rubbish that have been tipped at the side of the road or in small wooded areas in scenic spots all around the county,” Cllr Cahill said.
He said regular reports of indiscriminate dumping are being heard in places like Beaufort, Killorglin and Glencar while beaches in Derrynane, Rossbeigh and Cromane are also being targeted.
“A concerted effort needs to be made by Kerry County Council to trace the perpetrators of these crimes and ensure that they will not be able continue to pollute and desecrate the natural beauty of this county on a continuing basis,” Cllr Cahill remarked.
“We must all make that effort to bring our own rubbish home with us, to be disposed of through the refuse collection system or at our transfer stations. It is a matter for us all collectively to protect our environment,” said Cllr Cahill.
