CHARITY champion cyclists will pedal into Kerry in force this afternoon as the 19th annual Tour de Munster hits top gear.
The participants are raising funds for the Down Syndrome Ireland and individual beneficiaries and they will compete on the roads of the county throughout the weekend before departing again on Sunday.
Over 100 amateur cyclists are tackling the demanding 600km route across the six counties of Munster and they are joined by Tour de France legend Sean Kelly who is participating for the 13th year.
All funds raised from the charity cycle will go directly to the chosen charities and the event has already generated a whopping €2.78 million for its beneficiaries since 2001.
Setting out from Killaloe this morning, the cyclists will arrive in Tarbert by ferry at 2.00pm before heading on to Listowel and Tralee where they will be greeted with a real party atmosphere at Manor West.
This Saturday will see them setting off again at 9.45, pedaling their way from Tralee to Dingle, Castlemaine, Milltown, Aghadoe and Killanrey where they will enjoy a 30-minute break at the Down Syndrome run Deenagh Lodge café in the national park at Knockreer from 4.00pm.
They will then head to Kenmare, via Moll’s Gap, where they will overnight and they will set off for west Cork at 10.00am on Sunday.
