To the waters, not the wilds in lovely Lough Lein

The Lakes of Killarney provided a truly spectacular setting, on this glorious sunny Sunday afternoon, as the Flesk Valley Rowing Club hosted the county coastal championships for the very first time.

Local clubs from Fossa, Workmen and Flesk Valley, were joined by crews from throughout the county, including Sneem, Valentia, Sive, Templenoe, Caherdaniel, Caherciveen and Cromane, to compete in the ICRF Celtic Yawl boat in categories from under 12 right up to senior.
Flesk Valley Club was due to celebrate its centenary year in 2020 but, unfortunately, due to Covid, the planned celebrations had to be postponed so today marked a joyous return to the water for a truly fabulous spectacle.

“We were delighted to host this regatta to mark our long history of rowing on the lakes and welcoming all the participants and showcasing what our 102-year-old club has to offer,” said club chairman John Fleming.
The Kerry Coastal Rowing Association Regatta was the final event before the clubs head to the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation’s All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships to compete for national titles in Ferrybank next weekend.
Today’s regatta, which featured some tremendous races and some agonisingly close finishes, took place on Lough Lein, in Castlelough Bay – at the Flesk Valley boathouses – and the action commenced at 10.30am.
