Killarney based MEP Seán Kelly MEP has been very vocal and consistent in his support for an end to the tradition of daylight saving time which he has branded “nonsensical”.
Now it has emerged that the bi-annual time change, which will see the clocks going forward an hour at 1.00am this Sunday, is bad for our health, according to one of the country’s foremost medical professionals.
Trinity College Professor Luke O’Neill said there is very clear evidence that a few days after the clock changes, there is an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes because people are out of sync with their biological clocks.

“The reason seems to be the immune system doesn’t like it,” he told Pat Kenny on Newstalk.
Prof O’Neill said studies have shown that there are inflammatory pressures detected in the blood soon after the clocks change because there is some stress on the body.
“Those inflammatory proteins might increase your risk of a heart attack,” he said.
Prof O’Neill, a leading expert on biochemistry, said studies have highlighted that the risk of a fatal car crash occurring also increases in the days immediately after the clocks change.
Meanwhile, MEP Seán Kelly has repeatedly called for an end to the archaic time changes for health and safety reasons.
“Various studies show that going against the natural rhythm has a detrimental impact on sleep and health,” he said.
