There’s a great old saying that volunteers may not necessarily have the time but they always have the heart and when it comes to raising a hand to help present the town in the best possible light, Killarney has never been found wanting.

Just as it is with the mountain Meitheal, the tidy towns clean-up group, the St Patrick’s Day parade or Christmas in Killarney, there are always dedicated local people willing and able to lend a hand when needed and those in authority in the town know that Killarney is blessed in that regard.
While many are quite happy to sit on the fence and watch the world roll by, or criticise from afar, there are always people willing to roll up their sleeves, don the high-vis bibs and get to work – for Killarney as opposed to themselves.

The events organised for the three-day Celebration of Irish American Friendship very much highlighted the wonderful spirit of volunteerism that prevails in Killarney and the hugely reliable men, women and teenagers were out in force ensuring that the events ran safely and smoothly and the one common trait was that the all had smiles on their faces and were loving being involved.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has praised all those who lent a hand in recent days, including the team that helped decorate the town and the venues, marshals who accompanied the gala parade on its journey through the streets, those who assisted with ticket distribution and stewarding at events and the businesses who made an extra effort to decorate their premises.
“We just couldn’t do what we do without the volunteers and their contribution is as immense as it is valued,” the chamber executive said.
