THE two Killarney residents that perished along with a friend in a drowning tragedy in south Kerry on Sunday have been named.

Anatolijs Teivans (57) and Jurijs Burcevs (30) both lived in Killarney with their families and their 38-year-old pal, Valerijs Klementjevs, resided in Tralee.

They were all originally from Latvia but they moved to live in Kerry a number of years ago.

Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Norma Foley, has extended the sympathy of the people of the county to the grieving families involved.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Latvian community and the men’s friends and neighbours. I have no doubt that the people of south Kerry and beyond will do everything they can to support the bereaved through this difficult period,” she said.

The three men lost their lives at Coonanna Harbour, between Kells and Caherciveen, during an ill-fated fishing trip in a small rib on Sunday.

One of the men, Anatolijs Teivans, is understood to have reached within 30 metres of the shoreline when he was located. It is believed he was trying to raise the alarm to save his friends after they were tossed into the water.

The badly damaged vessel was recovered from the water and it will be examined by the Marine Casualty Investigation Board.

The victims had been in the water for some hours though the cause of the accident remains a mystery.
