THE physically and mentally demanding annual 54321 Challenge, which involves gruelling marathon cycles and energy-sapping mountain climbs, will take place this year from August 20-23 inclusive with five people, spending four days tackling three cycles and two mountains for one cause – to help local charities.
The event is now entering its eighth year and, to date, the those involved have raised €207,000 for the chosen beneficiaries.
This year, in keeping with HSE Covid-19 safety advice, just five people will take part in the epic challenge to raise funds for the Skellig Stars, Kerry Hospice and Enable Ireland.
Day one, on Thursday, August 20, will see the participants cycle the 180km Ring of Kerry and on day two they will scale the 1,038m Carrauntoohil which is Ireland’s highest peak.
The third day will see the six teams of five cycle from Killarney to the foot of Mount Brandon before climbing the 953m mountain and on the final day they will cycle from Dingle to the finish line in Killarney.
The committee is currently looking at ways other people can participate in an online version of the challenge to raise funds and the members will be announcing details in the coming weeks via their website
and social media.
Those who wish to donate can get details of online donations information on the individual Facebook pages of the three charities or donations can be made by direct debit to Bank of Ireland, Killarney (sort code 90-57-58; Account No. 74356384; BIC BOFIIE2D and IBAN IE88BOFI90575874356384).
