A FIRST class relic of Saint Teresa of Calcutta, formerly known as Mother Teresa, will visit Killarney for three days in July, KillarneyToday.com can confirm.
The relic has been secured from the Sisters of Charity and a national tour of the country’s cathedrals has been arranged to facilitate its veneration by the faithful. The tour will also incorporate Knock Shrine and Lough Derg and the relic will then be given a permanent home in Newry Cathedral, in the Diocese of Dromore.
The draft itinerary has scheduled the relic to arrive in St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney at approximately 7.30pm on Saturday, July 8 and it will remain in the church until 4.00pm the following Monday.
The first location for veneration of the relic will be St Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh where Archbishop Eamon Martin will officiate at a procession.
Saint Teresa was born in Macedonia, to Albanian parents, in 1910 and she joined the Loreto Order and lived in Ireland until she transferred to India in 1929. She worked tirelessly on behalf of the poor and the destitute and that vocation led her to start her own order, the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta.
Pope John Paul II waived normal protocol to facilitate her canonisation which occurred in 2016.
