‘They need to remember that it could impact on their futures’

Sgt Dermot O’Connell: Advised Leaving Cert students to behave responsibly

GARDAI in Killarney have advised Leaving Cert students planning to celebrate their results tonight to behave responsibly and sensibly in public and to ensure they adhere to all public health guidelines.

Gardai will be adopting a zero tolerance approach and additional manpower resources, including members of the roads policing unit and the drugs squad, will be deployed in the town to ensure everything runs smoothly.

“We understand that they will want to celebrate and we are happy to see them enjoying themselves but they have to be mindful of the fact that we are currently dealing with a pandemic,” Sergeant Dermot O’Connell told KillarneyToday.com.

Park rangers and gardai will patrol the national park

Leaving Cert results nights in the past have led to rowdy open air drinking parties in Killarney National Park and in other public areas but gardai have been in contact with the National Parks and Wildlife Service to ensure extra park rangers will be on duty and on patrol tonight in addition to garda officers.

Gardai say are very conscious that many young people are likely to arrive in town from other areas for the night and they will be particularly vigilant in that regard.

“Everybody must be very conscious of public health guidelines and they must adhere to the advice given by public health officials,” Sgt O’Connell said.

“If the behaviour of any of the young people gives cause for concern and they come to the attention of gardai, they need to remember that it could impact on their future careers or on their ability to travel abroad to some countries,” he added.

“We want them all to have a safe and happy night and we hope they are all pleased with their results,” said Sgt O’Connell who is the sergeant-in-charge at Killarney Garda Station.
