THE GAA in Kerry is relying on a familiar voice to help raise the extra €1 million required to fund the development of a €6.25 million centre of excellence in the county.
Broadcasting legend Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh has provided a distinctive voiceover for a new promotional video (link below) that has been posted on Youtube.
The retired commentator tells viewers that past achievements is never a guarantee of future success and the centre of excellence – planned for Currans and the IT Tralee – will help to nurture the stars of the future and ensure the systems and facilities are in place to reinforce the foundations on which success can be built.
“Kerry, the Kingdom, is not only the most successful county in the history of Gaelic football, it also shaped the way it’s played,” Ó Muircheartaigh says.
“From the early work of Dick Fitzgerald and, later, Eamonn O’Sullivan and Mick O’Dwyer and many more, the skills of the game, the training methods and the tactical elements have been strongly influenced by Kerry people,” he added before encouraging the public to support the new centre of excellence.
In just over two years a whopping €5.2 million has been generated for the development with €1 million contributed by Kerry Group, Croke Park and the Munster Council.
A number of generously supported fundraisers held in the US and Britain which raised just short of another €1 million.
Kerry County Board aims to complete all phases of the centre of excellence between now and 2020. The six-pitch facility will be used to train all county teams – at every level – while the GAA will also have a dedicated unit within a new €15 million sports academy planned for IT Tralee.
