Terrific treble for master Tom

Tom Daly: making his mark in the Masters

DETERMINED Killarney cyclist, Tom Daly, was the most successful competitor at the National Masters Cycling Track Championships held in Dublin last Saturday.

He won gold in all three events he entered and he set a hot pace in a 500m time-trial, a 2k individual pursuit and a group scratch race.

Tom recently moved to Killarney, from Kanturk, and joined Killarney Cycling Club. He runs a cycling coaching business, specialising in services for older cyclists and coaches cyclists from Ireland, the USA and the UK.

He has enjoyed a long and varied background in sport, ranging from playing for the Kerry minor football team to being the first person to do a solo-circumnavigation of Ireland by kayak. In all, he competed in 12 different sports and worked as a physical education teacher for 20 years.

Tom, who now competes in the over 60 level, also wrote a book on cycling, The Rás: The Story of Ireland’s Unique Bike Race in 2003 and when in his mid-50s, when work and family circumstances allowed, he set about finding out how good he could really get at bike-racing.

“I have just an average natural talent as a cyclist but I have continued to develop through smart and informed training. My ambition is to remain healthy and competitive, to enjoy all the variety and richness of cycling and to help others likewise,” he said
