RESIDENTS of a quiet area in Killarney, some of them elderly and vulnerable, are being targeted by young tearaways who are intimidating them in their homes and engaging in anti-social behaviour on a regular basis, it has been revealed.
Cllr Brendan Cronin told a meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council that the incidents were occurring in the area between Ballydribeen Road and Doirin Alainn estate and he said several people getting on in years were being pestered.
In one instance on Sunday, July 16, young lads were climbing on to the rooftops of the houses and shouting down the chimney pots, he said.
“They are intimidating people living on their own and vulnerable people. On the night of the Munster Final they were banging on their doors,” said Cllr Cronin who said the culprits were between 13 and 15 years of age.
“If it is not curtailed now it will escalate. CCTV is needed there for the safety and security of local residents,” he said.
Town Manager, Angela McAllen, said Gardaí had been notified of the disturbances and were dealing with the issue and the council was working closely with them on the matter.
The meeting heard that some of those involved are from families of local authority tenants and because they are still technically children, there is very little the council can do.
Consideration can be given to the provision of CCTV depending on the availability of funds.
Cllr Donal Grady said one lady living in the area previously asked for CCTV cameras to be installed and when this was done she then claimed they interfered with her privacy and asked for them to be taken down again.
