The Mayor of Killarney has said the success in winning Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town award in this year’s national Tidy Towns Awards is a testament to the sense of community in the town.
As well as winning the title of Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town, Killarney missed out on the overall award by a single point but also captured a gold medal and was overall winner in the south west and mid west region.
Mayor Brendan Cronin said it marks a consistently high level of results in the national Tidy Towns Awards over the past 20 years and it demonstrates the pride that the people of Killarney, the businesses and the various organisations have in their town.
“We are honoured to have been named Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town today and I want to pay a huge tribute to everyone who has been involved in Killarney receiving the award.
“This is a team effort and much like the successes of Kerry football teams over the years, it isn’t down to a single person.
“This award is due to the combined efforts of the Killarney Looking Good committee, the staff and outdoor crews from Kerry County Council, the residents’ organisations, businesses, community groups and individuals.
“When we come together as a group, as a community, the sky is the limit, and the proof of that can be seen by today’s award,” Cllr Cronin stated.

He also paid tribute for former chair of Killarney Looking Good Yvonne Quill, who passed away last year, and stated that it was a fitting honour that the work she had overseen has continued.
“The Tidy Towns report on Killarney highlights the work being put in by the schools in Killarney with their Green Flags. This is hugely important as it means that the huge work that Yvonne and her committee put in over the years is being taken up by the next generation,” Mayor Cronin said.
“As a result, we are confident that for generations to come, the hard work necessary to achieve this success will be carried on and that Killarney will be well represented every year during the national Tidy Towns Awards.”

Four Kerry towns, Killarney, Tralee, Listowel and Kenmare, were awarded gold medals with bronze medals awarded to Portmagee and Sneem.
Meanwhile The Spa received an Endeavour award for their efforts in the Tidy Towns Competition while climate action award winners were Ballyduff, Castlegregory and Sneem.
Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Jim Finucane, the work that communities and voluntary organisations do, in collaboration with Kerry County Council, in helping to keep our county clean, is invaluable and helps show off the very best of Kerry to our many visitors from all over the world.
“I want to pay tribute to everybody in Kerry who has helped to pick up a piece of litter, or helped in their community clean-up and ensured that their little corner of Kerry is looking beautiful,” he said.
