Five go to TG4

They have become known, with good justification, as Fossa’s Famous Five and they certainly stole the show with a stunning performance on this week’s fast-paced TG4 talent search competition Scór Encore.
The young traditional musicians from the Killarney parish showcased their talents to a wide audience and they earned huge plaudits from the three celebrity judges who were more than impressed by what they saw and heard.
Seán Kelliher, Cian O’Sullivan, Dean O’Sullivan, John Murphy and Christy Buckley perform annually in Scór competitions at local, provincial and national level and it was while doing so that they caught the eye of the TG4 talent search team who invited them to play for the nation.
They performed a rousing reel for the studio audience and adjudicating panel comprising Seo Linn frontman and YouTube sensation Stiofán Ó Fearail, champion sean-nós dancer Gearóid Ó Dubháin and Dublin’s Hip Hop Rose of Tralee contestant Siobhéal Nic Eochaidh.
The judges were grasping for superlatives to describe the Fossa performance which they said was hugely professional with great energy and rhythm.
Hurling history
A seminar on the history of hurling, which will feature the input of a number of legends from the sport will be held in the Killarney National Park schoolhouse at Muckross on Saturday, April 26.
Former Kilkenny great Eddie Keher, who won 10 Leinster titles and six All-Ireland medals during a glorious playing career, will be one of the celebrity guests and also in attendance will be former Cork hurler and Sunday Game analyst Tomás Mulcahy.
Expert hurling coach Paudie Butler and Seamus J King, author of A History of Hurling, will participate and the master of ceremonies will be none other than retired broadcaster Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh.
The seminar will commence at 10.30am and bookings should be made in advance by calling 064-6630804.
Fleadh funds
The Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan, which will be held in Killarney from July 14-20, has been allocated a €4,000 cash boost by Kerry County Council.
Cllr Brendan Cronin, who submitted the request for financial support for the event, said it is important to put on record the great work being carried out by the five local organising committee branches in Killarney, Glenflesk, Fossa/Two-Mile, Sliabh Luachra and Kilcummin.
A wide range of events and competitions will be held at various venues during the course of the Fleadh.
“This money will, hopefully, assist them in their efforts,” Cllr Cronin said.
Ring online
Those planning to participate in this year’s Ring of Kerry charity cycle have been urged to register online to ensure they make it to the start line on Saturday, July 5.
Last year over 9,000 cyclists helped generate in excess of €1 million for deserving charities and as numbers are limited, early registration is advised to avoid disappointment.
A minimum donation of €70 must be paid and cyclists can download sponsorship cards if they wish to raise more for local charities.
The official website is www.ringofkerrycycle.ie.
Easter study
Dozens of Killarney students got their mid-term break off to a studious start this week when they enrolled for an intense but informative Easter revision course, facilitated by Brookfield College, at the Dromhall Hotel, Killarney.
Expert tuition in English, Irish, maths, science, business and French was on offer for both Leaving and Junior Cert students with classes starting at 9am and continuing until 6.30pm from Monday to next Friday evening.
