Water quality
The public water system at Lough Guitane, which supplies the greater Killarney area, is of the best possible quality and is not polluted, Kerry County Council officials have insisted.
Responding to a query from Cllr Michael Gleeson, (pictured), the local authority said the lake is of oligiotropic status with a low nutrient level.
The latest results from the River Finnow, however, exhibits water of slightly polluted status and it does not comply with the water framework directive standard.
Investigative monitoring conducted there in 2012 found no evidence of agricultural pollution.
Cllr Gleeson said the Lough Guitane finding was of vital importance as the water from the lake serves a large part of Kerry.
Parish clean-up
The annual spring clean-up in the parish of Beaufort is scheduled to go ahead this Saturday, April 12, commencing at 10am.
There is a great sense of pride of place in Beaufort and everybody that can help is being asked to lend a hand on the day to ensure the area is presented at its best in time for Easter.
Supplies will be available from the organising committee at the community hall from 10am.
Hospice walk
A charity walk to raise funds for the Kerry Hospice is planned for the village of Kilcummin on Good Friday with two distances to choose from.
A 10k route has been arranged for the more energetic participants while a 6k option is also on the agenda.
Both will commence at 10.30am from the local recreation hall and the organisers are hoping to at least match the €3,861 raised last year.
Charity cycle
A testing 80k cycle to generate funds for Barraduff National School will take place on Sunday, May 18.
This is the third year of the event and the familiar route will see participants pedal their way from Barraduff to Kilgarvan, Kenmare, Moll’s Gap and Killarney before returning to the village.
It is being billed as an ideal training opportunity for those preparing for this year’s Ring of Kerry charity cycle.
Building work
A derelict building at the edge of Killarney town is to be developed as a new base for an international car hire firm.
The site, located on Muckross Road, was previously used by the Kerry Mineral Water company but it has been in a state of disrepair for several years.
Site clearance and development work is currently underway.
Golden jubilee
Killarney Town Council is to hold a civic reception for the Muckross ICA to mark the organisation’s golden jubilee.
The reception will be held next Monday night at Lough Guitane National School and it is open to all.
Mayor of Killarney Paddy Courtney will preside at the civic reception which will take place before the business of the ICA’s annual general meeting gets underway.
Centra change
New owners will takeover the Centra supermarket and filling station at Fossa, Killarney from this Friday.
Lillian McCarthy, who has operated the busy business for many years, is retiring.
The new owner is Norman Foley who has vast experience in the retail trade with supermarkets in Tralee and Killorglin.
