Talk of the Town: Friday in brief

Alison’s double

scor logoAnabla National School in Kilcummin is to receive a GAA coaching kit thanks to the good fortune of one of its pupils.

Alison Moynihan was the lucky winner of a confined draw at the county finals of Scór na bPáisti in Ballybunion and the coaching tools prize will be shared by her fellow Anabla pupils.

Alison had double reason to celebrate as she was also on the Kilcummin team that won the county title in the set dancing competition. Her team-mates were Shauna O’Donoghue, Darren Lehane, Nicole Williams Nathan Counihan, Danny Cronin, Shauna O’Leary, Katie O’Leary and Michael Sweeney.

The other East Kerry club to excel at the finals was Glenflesk who won the figure dancing category thanks to Patrick Dineen, Muireann Darcy, John Rudden, Roisín Wall, Aileen Healy Jack Rudden, Eabha Healy, Alison O’Sullivan and Kate Rudden.

Cian Sheahan of Firies was second in the recitation, Kilcummin were second in the quiz and Ellen Sheehan, Aoife Kissane, Saoirse Bennett, Scarlett O’Reilly, Tova Ní Buachalla, Sophie Vousden, Sarah O’Neill and Aoife Doody helped Fossa to second place in the novelty act.

Mon classic

The parents’ association of the Monastery national school in Killarney will hold a fundraising pitch and putt classic on bank holiday Monday, May 5, at Deerpark pitch and putt club.

The format will be a three-ball scramble and the event is timed to start at 10am. Teams must be pre book by contacting the school on 064-6633687

The entry fee is €35.00 per team and that will include a barbecue. There will be a perpetual trophy and category awards along with a raffle for some fantastic prizes.

This is the second year of the classic and the inaugural event last year proved to be a great success as it was greatly supported by club members, teachers, students and families.

“We are encouraging every Mon school pupil, past and present, to support this event by either booking a team, sponsoring a team or making a donation towards the event,” said organising committee member Nuala Doolan.

“Our aim is to raise enough funds to introduce new iPads to the school which will be of great assistance to the pupils.”

Easter camp

Dr Crokes GAA club will host an action-packed Easter Camp for boys and girls, aged from five to 12, from next Tuesday to Thursday.

The venue will be the club’s grounds on Lewis Road and registration will commence on Tuesday at 10.30am.

The camp will run from 11am to 2.30pm each day and participants are asked to bring a packed lunch and drinks.

Full details are available from coaching officer John O’Shea on 087-2488768.

Scooter scare

Mobility scooter users in busy Killarney housing estates are being forced to drive on the roads because the footpaths around their homes can’t accommodate them, it has been claimed.

Local elections candidate John O’Shea said the scooters are designed solely for use on footpaths and not public roads.

“This is an accident waiting to happen and it needs to be addressed as soon as possible,” he said.

Celtic fun

Killarney Celtic FC will hold a family fun day on May 5 and all members are invited to attend the novel event.

It will take place in the club grounds at Celtic Park and the festivities will get underway at 2pm.
