A KILLARNEY councillor has told of his sorrow following news of the passing of the wife of Department of Health’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan.
Dr Emer Holohan (née Feely) passed away, peacefully and following a long illness, at Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross in Dublin in the early hours of Friday morning.
Her husband has been the public face of the fight against Covid-19 and his calm, reassuring manner and practical but no-nonsense approach has helped put people all over the country at greater ease.
Expressing his sympathy to Dr Holohan and the couple’s two children, Clodagh and Ronan, Cllr Michael Gleeson said throughout the now almost year-long pandemic, people have become familiar with the face of Dr Holohan.
“His calm voice and quiet dignity have reassured us at times of unease. When we felt fragile and a little frightened, he gave us hope and confidence,” he said.
Cllr Gleeson said people are deeply grateful for all that he has done.
“We became even more appreciative when we learned that his wife, Dr Emer, was seriously ill,” he said.
The Killarney councillor said at a time when one who is relatively young dies, he is reminded of the lines from an Emily Dickinson poem:
“In this short life that only lasts an hour,
How much – how little – is within our power.”
