Submission on the need for affordable housing

Submissions have been made to the Department of Housing for an affordable housing scheme to be sanctioned for Killarney.

The 249 units currently being developed at Cronin’s Wood are designated for social housing but Cllr Martin Grady has pointed out many young working families won’t qualify because they are over the threshold.

He said affordable housing schemes give young working families the opportunity to own a home and such projects are already operating successfully in other counties.

“The last affordable housing scheme in Killarney was over 20 years ago so this submission from Kerry County Council is most welcome,” Cllr Grady said.

Kerry County Council made the submission earlier this month for the scheme to be progressed in the towns of Tralee and Killarney.

Cllr Martin Grady: Affordable housing need

The 249 social housing dwellings at Cronin’s Wood will comprise:

* Two five-bedroom houses

* Six four-bedroom houses

·      117 three-bedroom houses

·      18 two-bedroom houses

·      68 two-bedroom apartments

·      38 one-bedroom apartments

All the dwellings will be contained in two-storey buildings with a mix of terraced and semi-detached.

The development will include public open spaces, including play facilities, a new vehicular access from Upper Park Road with pedestrian crossings, hard and soft landscaping and the apartments will feature balconies and ground floor terraces to provide private open spaces.

The development at Cronin’s Wood will also feature a two-storey 417 sq m crèche, 510 car parking spaces, including accessible spaces, 352 bicycle parking spaces and a new two-way cycle path and footpath along Upper Park Road.
