FOUR students from Killarney have been chosen to participate in the Irish finals of a high-profile European Union Science Olympiad in Dublin this weekend.
Cian O’Sullivan, Kuba Labecki, Aoife Doyle and Molly O’Mahony will compete in the event at Dublin City University on Saturday and they could qualify to represent their country at either the international Olympiad in Klagenfurt, Austria or in Mendoza, Argentina, depending on their age categories.
They were selected to participate by the State Examinations Commission based on their 95-100 per cent A grade results in mathematics and science in this year’s Junior Certificate.
Cian O’Sullivan, from Fossa, and Kuba Labecki both attend St Brendan’s College while Aoife Doyle, from Beaufort, and Molly O’Mahony, from Fossa, are students at Intermediate School Killorglin.
Saturday’s event at DCU is a three-hour individual examination on more challenging scientific problems than they will have encountered on the school syllabus with an emphasis on physics, chemistry or biology.
All participants will receive certificates and there will also be gold, silver and bronze medals awarded to the highest achievers who will be invited to return to DCU for specialist training in advance of the European and World Olympiad.
