Students raise their cups to fight cancer

THREE caring students, two of whom are from Killarney, are organising a coffee morning to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

Clíona O’Shea from Moll’s Gap, Elizabeth Mohan from Muckross and their friend, Bríd Cronin from Freemount, Co Cork, will host the event in the Fáilte Hotel in Killarney on Saturday, January 19 from 10am to 12pm.

The three young ladies are members of the University College Cork Cancer Society and every year they also help to organise a Cork Relay for Life 24-hour fundraiser for the same cause.

The aims of the society are to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, to remember loved ones lost to cancer and to fight back against the disease by raising awareness and funds for research.

On the lead up to the event students organise fundraisers in their own localities and that is the purpose of the Killarney coffee morning.

“Everyone will know or have known someone who fought or is fighting a battle with cancer, and the National Cancer Registry of Ireland predicts that by 2020, one in two people in Ireland will develop cancer,” said Cliona.

“We would like to invite all, from far and wide, to come and support the fight against cancer by attending our coffee morning,” she said.

Cliona, Elizabeth and Brid have thanked the local community of Killarney in advance for their generosity and the O’ Callaghan family of the Fáilte Hotel for hosting the coffee morning.
