Students find the right language for success

The Killorglin Community College Think Languages students with their teachers Saoirse Riordan and Karen Fitzgerald

Transition Year students of Killorglin Community College have been declared the winners of a nationwide social media competition despite intense competition from a total of 15,000 students from 180 schools.

The Think Languages competition, in conjunction with Languages Connect, is an annual celebration of languages and culture and this year’s theme focused on the topic Think Global, Act Local.

Students were encouraged to examine the diversity of languages spoken within their school, community and beyond as inspiration for their activities and events.

The event featured 15,000 students from 180 schools

Two transition year classes classes from Killorglin Community College, led by teachers Saoirse Riordan and Karen Fitzgerald, organised a variety of events over a two-week period in November.

These activities included a language class with pupils of different nationalities teaching the second year students a number of other languages including French, German, Polish, Chinese and Ukrainian. There were also language-themed workshops, including sign language and exhibitions while the college students involved groups taught Spanish to the fourth class students of Scoil Mhuire in Killorglin.

The participating students also took part in a 30-minute opening ceremony and a virtual quiz which saw them finish 12th out of over 800 teams.

All events were actively promoted and shared on the group’s social media platforms.

Spanish teacher Saoirse Riordan, Spanish Teacher said the creativity, leadership and teamwork skills the students displayed are a testament to them.

“They fully embraced the initiative which was evident in the variety of languages and cultures represented. As a school that prides itself on being innovative and diverse, this accolade undoubtedly represents what we as a school are about; inclusion, equality and learning,” she remarked.
