A WOMAN who survived horrific overnight conditions after getting lost on Mangerton mountain on Monday was finally located and brought to safety shortly after 8 o’clock this morning,
The lone climber, aged in her 50s and from Gneeveguilla, raised the alarm when she contacted emergency services by mobile phone at 3.30pm on Monday to say she couldn’t find her way down from the mountain.
An extensive search operation was mounted by the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team but it was hampered by dreadful conditions with torrential rain almost eliminating visibility on the mountain.
The rescue team was able to contact the woman by text message and she was instructed to download an application that revealed her exact location.
When it became clear that the operation would take longer than anticipated, she was advised to take shelter overnight to avoid the threat of hypothermia from the sub-zero temperatures on the mountain.
The woman was eventually located early this Tuesday and although shaken, she was in very good physical condition.
The rescue team used ropes to lower themselves down to her location and she was accompanied down the mountain on foot.
