The magic of Killarney National Park and, in particular, a traditional boat trip on the Lakes of Killarney, has been highlighted to a huge audience in Australia by a popular newspaper.
Steve McKenna, a journalist with The West Australian, enjoyed a tour of the lakes with boatman Joe O’Sullivan and has written extensively and glowingly about the experience in his Perth-based publication which has Australia’s largest share of market penetration of any newspaper in the country.
He lauds what he terms as the ever-changing scenery, light and reflections with the sun sporadically blasting through the clouds – and he described it as one of his favourite places on the Emerald Isle.
Informed of local traditions, culture and history by the local boatman, McKenna goes into great detail about the lure of Innisfallen, Ross Castle, the salmon and trout rich lakes, the deer population and the whit-tailed sea eagles.
In a report that really promotes the town and its attractions to an Australian audience, McKenna also details the story of the Annals of Innisfallen chronicling Ireland’s medieval history, which are now housed in the Bodleian Library in Oxford but there is a campaign to have the historic manuscripts returned to Killarney.
The West Australian is estimated to have an average weekday circulation of well in excess of 100,000.
