Stories will bring Killarney memories flooding back

Sandra Dunlea has spent several months encouraging groups and individuals to get involved

A fascinating exhibition of stories about Killarney, featuring the spoken word, photographs, song, dance and art, will be launched at Killarney House this Wednesday.

Painstakingly curated by local woman Sandra Dunlea, the Storied Killarney exhibition will feature local people sharing what they love, what they have learned and what they remember about their unique homeplace.

The event features contributions from local storytellers, aged between five and 89, including Jessica McCrohan, Lauren Casey, Maurice Moriarty, Brian Bowler, Anna Dunlea, Daisy Sugrue, Stephen Cotter, members of the Killarney Men’s Sheds and Killarney Creatives with graphic design by Mathona O’Connor.

There are eight main stories, following the Storied Kerry themes of landscape, archeology, folklore, history, contemporary, legend, fauna, flora and a young people’s section which has photographs of Killarney’s youth sharing their favourite spots in their home town and its surrounds.

The voluntary community exhibition presents everyday Killarney through the eyes of its own people, using their words, photography, art, dance and song.

“It is bringing stories to life from many people who wouldn’t ordinarily consider themselves storytellers,” said curator Sandra.

She has spent several months encouraging groups and individuals, young and not so young, to get involved in aspects of the story of their native Killarney.

The exhibition opens this Wednesday and will continue until Christmas and it will be based in the Garden Room of Killarney House from 9.15am to 1.00pm and from 2.00pm to 5.15pm.

All of those who worked on the Storied Killarney project will chat with Frank Lewis on Radio Kerry’s Saturday Supplement from 9.00am to 11.00am on Saturday, November 25.
