Still no progress on key St Finan’s site

The St Finan’s building has been vacant since 2012

The long since abandoned St Finan’s Hospital site in Killarney is still subject to an ongoing assessment by the Land Development Agency as to its future use, a meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council head this Wednesday.

Cllr Brendan Cronin asked officials for a progress report on the site and all HSE lands in Killarney arising from a recent meeting between council officials and the Land Development Agency.

He was told that further information was sought from the HSE in July and the outcome of the assessment is still awaited.

Cllr Cronin said it’s quite ironic that the St Finan’s site remains derelict and vacant while a similar property – the former 14-acre St Kevin’s Hospital site in Cork – has been developed with the first of 265 residential units due to be occupied in 2025.

“It’s an ideal and important site to help tackle our housing crisis,” he said.

Cllr Marie Moloney said the land has been idle in Killarney for years despite the fact that it would be perfect for housing.

“There has not been a single, solitary move on it. The council needs to put more pressure on the Land Development Agency,” she said.
