THE red alert is over but a Status Orange weather warning remains in force for Kerry until at least 6 o’clock this evening.

The Kerry Local Coordination Group met at 11.30am to review the situation and it strongly advises motorists to avoid travel as much as possible and, where travel is undertaken, to proceed with extreme caution, especially on local and regional routes.

While conditions are expected to improve very gradually during the afternoon and this evening, the group has received reports of very poor conditions in many parts of the county at this stage.

There are reports of poor conditions on parts of the N70 Ring of Kerry road, near Kells, and at Coomakista while the Conor Pass in west Kerry is closed to traffic.

National primary routes and some additional routes have been treated this morning by council crews but there will be difficult conditions on most routes until a full thaw sets in.

Kerry County Council has begun to treat paths and roads in many towns and villages and this work will continue throughout the day. Pedestrians should exercise caution underfoot.

Council staff were out in appalling weather to make conditions safer for pedestrians and road users and their commitment and dedication has not gone unnoticed.
