Stars always rise on the East

Not surprisingly, divisional champions Dr Crokes dominated the awards in 2022 following their emphatic 1-18 to 1-7 O’Donoghue Cup final victory over Spa, but the destination of this year’s East Kerry All-Stars won’t become any clearer until the clubs in the district go head-to-head on the field of play.

This year’s awards scheme, sponsored by the Aquila Club and The Kerryman, were launched at a function in the Gleneagle Hotel which was attended by representatives of all the clubs in the area.

Crokes won a whopping nine awards last season and they are fancied by man to be the team to beat in this year’s campaign although town rivals Killarney Legion, an in-form Spa side and the Clifford brothers inspired Fossa side will have other ideas.

Dr Crokes sharpshooter Tony Brosnan was named Footballer of the Year in 2022 with his clubmate Evan Looney – a very exciting prospect which has come to Jack O’Connor’s attention – chosen as Young Footballer of the Year.

Last year’s All-Star team was: Shane Murphy (Dr Crokes), Evan Looney (Dr Crokes), Mark Fitzgerald (Dr Crokes), Owen Fitzgerald (Gneeveguilla), Ryan O’Carroll (Spa), Mark Cooper (Dr Crokes), Brian Looney (Dr Crokes), Ruairi Murphy (Listry), Cian Gammell (Killarney Legion), James O’Donoghue (Killarney Legion), Daithi Casey (Dr Crokes), SeanO’Keeffe (Gneeveguilla), Mikey Casey (Dr Crokes), Tony Brosnan (Dr Crokes), Kieran O’Leary (Dr Crokes), Mikey Casey (Dr Crokes).
