IT’S one of the longest-running and most popular community sporting events of its kind in the country and this year will see another glorious chapter unfold in the success story that is the Killarney Athletic FC 7-a-side soccer tournament.
This will be the 38th year of the action-packed summer sevens, sponsored by Killarney Credit Union, and the big kick-off has been fixed for Monday, June 30.
The tournament, details of which were revealed at this week’s launch, will feature competitions for senior men and ladies, over 35 and underage boys and girls and a big number of entries is expected at every level.
“What better way to pass the summer evenings than putting it up to the cream of Kerry soccer or just giving it all in the spirit of fun with a bunch of your friends,” said Killarney Athletic FC chairman Tom Tobin.
The competitive underage event will be run over a few days, with age groups from under 10 to under 12 on the weekend of July 11/12 and under 14 and under 16 also on the schedule.
In the senior tournament, along with the prestigious Premier and Reserve Cup categories, the Kieran Cahillane Senior Player of the Tournament award will be on offer for the outstanding player on view, while the Johnny Heffernan Underage Player of the Tournament award will also be up for grabs.
To acknowledge the current economic climate, the organisers are maintaining the entry fee at last year’s level and are hoping for a high entry across the categories.
The relevant fees are: Senior Men: €200; Over 35s: €150; Ladies: €150; U10/12: €50; U 14/16: €75.
Application forms are available from Killarney Credit Union, Beech Road and Park Road as well as Scott’s Bar or they can be downloaded from www.killarneyathletic.com.
The closing date for senior entries – to be returned to one of the above venues – is Friday, June 20 and the draw will take place on Sunday, June 22 in Scott’s Bar at 9pm.
