Stabbing victim is named locally

GARDAI in Kerry have renewed their appeal to any witnesses who may have been in the area of a fatal stabbing in the early hours of this morning to get in touch.

The incident occurred at around 4.30am or earlier outside a house at Fertha Drive, Caherciveen.

A 33-year-old man, named locally this evening as Robert Elston, suffered serious stab wounds and died in an ambulance as it rushed him to University Hospital Kerry.

A 20-year-old local man was arrested a short time later and was brought to Killarney Garda Station where was detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

There are some reports that a knife was found at the scene and it has been removed for forensic examination.

It is understood that the victim was originally from Lisselton in north Kerry but was a regular visitor to Caherciveen where he has family ties.

The coroner for Kerry, Helen Lucey, was informed of the incident and a post mortem examination was due to be conducted at the hospital in Tralee.

Gardai, who have conducted house to house enquiries in Fertha Drive, sealed off the area in Caherciveen and it has been preserved for a technical examination by officers from the Garda Technical Bureau.

Investigating Gardai have asked anybody that may have seen or heard anything at the time of the incident or those who might have any information to contact them at Killarney Garda Station on 064-6631222, Caherciveen Garda Station on 066-9773600 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.
