Spending limit won’t allow works

FUNDING set aside for badly needed roadworks in a residential area in Killarney will only cover a small area as opposed to the whole estate, Kerry County Council has confirmed.

Lackabane Village in Fossa, where the roadway in the first phase of the development is in an appalling state, with giant potholes and the road surface stripped of any remaining tarmacadam, had been approved for the 2019 road restoration programme in the Killarney West area.

But it has emerged that the total amount to be spent is just €32,200 which won’t include the worst section of roadway on the left-hand side after the main entrance.

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae told Killarney Municipal District Council that the particular stretch of road – which is quite short – is in a really shocking state and needs urgent attention.

But officials confirmed that the restoration work will be concentrated on the 80m stretch from the main Fossa road to the first internal roundabout within the Lackabane Village development and that no funding has been provided for any other section.

Over €1 million in total has been allocated for projects in Killarney under Kerry County Council’s road restoration programme for 2019.
