A DRIVER in Killarney was stopped by Gardai after being clocked speeding at 132kph in a 100kph zone earlier today.
The Skoda driver was nabbed at Minish – on the main Killarney to Glenflesk road – on what has been designated national Slow Down Day with Gardai warning in advance that there would be extra vigilance on the roads.
The driver was observed travelling at an alarming speed by the Kerry Roads Policing Unit and a fine was issued when the vehicle was stopped.
Another driver was detected driving 78km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R563 in Faha, on the main Killarney to Milltown road.
The national speed enforcement operation Slow Down, supported by the Road Safety Authority and other stakeholders, is running for a 24-hour period from 7am this Friday until 7am on Saturday.
The nationwide operation consists of high visibility speed enforcement zones, which now number over 1,000.
The objective is to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on the roads. Gardaí said the aim is to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, increase compliance with speed limits and act as a deterrent to driving at excessive or inappropriate speed.
“We can never be complacent about road safety,” a spokesman said.
